ACT’s initial numbers indicate drop in medium-duty orders for October

COLUMBUS, Ind. – With October’s preliminary data showing Classes 5-8 booking 32,400 net orders, ACT Research says medium-duty orders are down 10% month-to-month, with heavy duty coming in flat.

“NA Classes 5-7 orders at 18,400 units, were down 10% from September and 18% compared to year ago October orders,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president and senior analyst.

Speaking on the heavy-duty sector, Vieth said, “The month’s 14,000 net order reflects lingering overcapacity from too many Class 8 tractors being purchased relative to freight creation in 2015 and into early 2016.”

ACT noted that October is typically a strong order month for both medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, and that seasonal adjustment adjusts actual volumes lower.
