NTSB issues safety alert for drivers carrying oversized loads

by Truck News

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued a safety alert to carriers transporting oversize loads to ensure they obtain the proper permits and review all possible routes prior to departure.

“When transporting oversize loads, planning ahead is critical,” said NTSB chairman Christopher Hart. “Both carriers and permitting authorities need to do their part to ensure the safe transport of oversize loads.”

The alert has been issued in the wake of two oversize load crashes that led to partial bridge collapses, one in May 2013 on the Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge near Mount Vernon, Wash., and the other in Salado, Texas March 2015 that involved an oversize load on Interstate 35.
